 Yusuke Muroi | B-sai education

Open Letter is pleased to present “B-sai Education,” a solo exhibition by Yusuke Muroi starting July 9 (Sat). (This term for the title was coined by Muroi as “B-grade education” against “gifted education.”) Influenced by graffiti and Art Brut, Muroi has been creating installations and paintings as his main media, and recently he has been creating and exhibiting works using swords and other figurative objects that he was strongly attracted to as a child as motifs. In this solo exhibition, Muroi will present paintings based on the motifs of the dolls for Boy’s festival, Onigawara (Japanese gargoyle), and anime characters that she was also passionate about as a child, as well as works made of the reconstructed materials used in her past installations as completely different objects.

Muroi’s works can be characterized by a childlike hand of expression, such as innocence and unrestrainedness, also, a composition of works based on great deal of material that overwhelms the viewer and a relentless accumulation of parts. Although these characteristics can be seen as a continuation of Art Brut, it seems that the more Muroi immerses himself in the art world, the more ambivalent feelings toward the various systems of art he has, and the more one struggles with feelings of resignation, pathos, and the inability to achieve the “free expression” that he should have been able to achieve as a child.

The title of this exhibition, “B-sai Education,” seems to be a self-irony about Muroi himself, but at the same time, it also seems to be an expression of his attitude toward his work, as he wonders how he will face his “lost senses” (see below) in his work. Please come and see the exhibition.

Artist Statement

In my childhood, when I did not even understand the concept of “B” class, the value of everything seemed to be flat. In such a way of looking at things, there were objects that strangely attracted me. Of course, this was within the range of the choices and environment I was given.

For example, the devil tiles on the roof of my mother’s house, dolls and carp streamers for the Boys’ Festival, a kumade (a Japanese toy bow) displayed in an alcove, a haniwa (a straw hatchet) in a museum, a float from a local festival, a traditional kokeshi doll from Tohoku that my grandfather bought as a gift, and cactus from a home center. As a child, I was fascinated by such things and repeatedly drew pictures of these motifs. As my interest shifted to popular cartoons and video games, I still had my free-form book full of drawings of original dungeons and monsters, and I was always curious about slightly minor characters.

As I grew older, however, I stopped drawing at some point, and the cacti I had collected died.

Perhaps my work is more like mourning for lost senses than trying to get closer to the senses of my childhood. Or perhaps I am trying to update the pictures of my childhood that I cannot paint now, but only enjoy them under the guise of nature.

– Yusuke Muroi

About Yusuke Muroi

1990 Born in Gunma Prefecture
2011 Withdrew from Tama Art University, Department of Information Design, Information Art Course
2015 Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts, Department of Advanced Art and Design
2019 Completed Tokyo University of the Arts, Graduate School of Fine Arts, Department of Global Art Practice
After working as a teaching and research assistant at the same university, currently based in Ibaraki.

Influenced by graffiti, he began creating works on the street in 2009. He takes photographs of landscapes created by arranging everyday items and other materials in the suburbs, as if he were a discoverer. In the course of these works, he was strongly influenced by Art Brut while he was a university student, but he realized that he was not capable of creating such works, and he began to search for Art Brut in the academic field. In recent years, he has been creating works based on themes from his own memories and dreams, as well as his labor and daily life. He is thinking about the fact that personal memories are almost worthless to others, but whether or not he can find value in them when he sees them on his own scale, and the fact that ambiguity of memory can lead to leaps in imagery. He also places importance on creating a space for the exhibition by actually working on site.

Muroi also participates in the following activities
Toho-ha” as the current form of the “Street Observation Society”
Isshu-mawatte Tsurai” project, which commercializes unnecessary things with the power of sensitivity.
Tofutokani Club“, an artists’ collective that creates one piece of artwork a day.

He will also start an artist-run space “AP Donou” in Toride City, Ibaraki Prefecture, in July 2022.
