Open Letter では、2022 年 4 月 30 日（土）よりペインター キンマキさんの個展「message」を 開催いたします。

ポストイット、スニーカー、友人とまったり過ごす時間、そして、実家で見つけた家族のメモ書き…キンマキさんの作品には、そうした見る人の記憶にふれたり、思わずくすっと笑いそうになるモチーフが繰り返し描かれています。しかし、その画面 / 展示空間においては、物語的または言語的な意義の同一性を回避するような構成がとられており、「分かろうとする」ことを常にはぐらかすような、本人が言うところの「バグる」ような感覚を覚えます。

キンマキさんは、自身の制作について、この「バグる」という表現を象徴的に使います。これまでの絵画実験 ー 例えば絵画作品の展示空間をインスタレーションとしてメタ的に捉え直す、同一モチーフを大きなキャンバスに小さく描き、小さなキャンバスに大きく描くといったイリュージョンの入れ子構造をつくる、または復数の作品を半強制的に関連づける展示構成でタブローのポータビリティを無効化する等 ー は、一貫して絵画というメディアを利用して「バグる」状態をつくり出す実践とも言えます。

本展のタイトルにもなっている “message” は、キンマキさんが最近取り組んでいるシリーズで、実家で見つけた手書きメモを絵画フォーマットに還元する、つまり文字をイメージ化することで言葉をバグらせる作品です。モチーフとなっているメモは、買い物リストだったり、家事の予定だったりといった、まさに雑記そのものです。家族のメモと聞くと、至極パーソナルなものを想像しますが、ここでは万人に開かれた形象に変わり、キンマキさんならではの「絵画を通してできること」がユーモアを持って表現されています。ぜひ、ご覧にいらしてください。

作家プロフィール

1995 年生まれ、三重県出身。
2020年、武蔵野美術大学 大学院 造形研究科 修士課程 美術専攻 油絵コース 修了。
現在東京を拠点に制作。

Maki Kim “message”

Open Letter is pleased to present “message,” a solo exhibition of painter Kinmaki starting from April 30, 2022.

Post-its, sneakers, spending time with friends, and family notes found at home… Kim’s works repeatedly depict motifs that touch the viewer’s memory or make him or her giggle. However, the composition of his works on the screen and in the exhibition space avoids to let the viewers have the identification of narrative or linguistic significance, and the viewers feel as if their perception are constantly being led astray, or “buggy,” as Kim calls it.

Kim symbolically uses the expression “buggy” to describe her works. She has experimented with painting – for example, meta-imagining the exhibition space of paintings as an installation, creating a nested structure of illusions by painting the same motif on a large canvas in a small size and on a small canvas in a large size, and so on. In other words, it can be said that the practice of creating a “buggy” state by using the medium of painting consistently.

The title of this exhibition, “message,” is a series that Kim has been working on recently, in which handwritten notes found at her parents’ house are reduced to a painting format, or in other words, words are made to be buggy out of images of the letters. The notes as motifs are miscellaneous notes, such as shopping lists or household chore schedules. Although we imagine something extremely personal when we hear the word “family memo,” here it is transformed into an image that is open to all, and expresses with humor what only Kim can do through his paintings. I think it is interesting that by painting these words, they are no longer directed at anyone.

1995 Born in Mie Prefecture.
Completed the master’s course in oil painting at Musashino Art University, Tokyo, Japan in 2020.
Currently lives and works in Tokyo.
