ordinary sculpture

Open Letter

Statements

Mayo Murakami

I create a room to feel “I am here.

For me, creating a work of art is a constant confirmation of my existence, as well as a constant questioning. It is as if I keep asking myself in the mirror, “Who am I? to myself in the mirror.
I am trapped in the fact that I cannot see myself as I really am, and I guess I continue to create art as the only way to escape from this fact.

The “I” that appears in my works is like an image of myself, like the reflection in a mirror. When I, who have no outline, hide in a room, how far does my skin go?

The existence of “I” may be a delusion only within me. Because I am the only one in the world who can clearly feel that “I” am here.

Justin Karera Yamamoto

Tracing past actions. It makes the actual act and the time and space in which it took place present once again. At the same time, however, tracing also fills in and renews the past, the acts and spaces that have stood up in the past and are now empty. In a sense, it may be an erasure of the past through tracing.

In the gallery, there will be an enormous amount of Murakami’s works. To add a small “not being there” to the obvious “being there” of the works in front of us. This time, the creation of my work began with the idea that erasing or tracing is such an act.

The work in front of me vibrates between “being there” and “not being there.” At that moment, I would say the “exhibition” could be “staged.”

ordinary sculpture

The term “ordinary sculpture” means “normal not special sculpture.”
The term was coined with the intention of expressing a relationship in which the ordinary comes to life through the space.
We believe that this is connected to the state of “nostalgia,” which triggers various emotions by triggering memories back to a certain point in time.

The works by Mayo Murakami in this exhibition have a vividness that makes us imagine the human body from their forms.
And in common, they make us feel the presence of someone.
Karera Yamamoto, who participates as an “exhibition performance,” also expresses the presence of someone.

“Nostalgia” can be seen as a state of thinking with the self as the axis and facing the self at the same time.
Being aware of someone else’s presence may trigger a similar feeling of nostalgia.

Open Letter is a gallery where the exhibition space exists as an extension of family life.
Based on this environment, we aim to create a mechanism that acts on [nostalgia].
We hope that the presence of someone for the viewer will intersect in the exhibition space, and that the viewer who confronts this presence will superimpose it on himself or herself.
